Step 5: Gradually mix in the dry ingredients until combined.
Step 6: Stir in the chocolate chips and nuts (if using).
Step 7: Chill the dough for 30 minutes (optional, but recommended).
Step 8: Drop rounded tablespoonfuls of dough onto an ungreased baking sheet, spacing them 2 inches apart.

Step 10: Let the cookies cool on the baking sheet for 2 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
As much as I love the classic chocolate chip cookie, there are plenty of ways to tweak the recipe to make it your own. Here are a few variations I’ve tried over the years that have become family favorites.
Add White Chocolate Chips
For a sweeter version, try substituting half of the semisweet chocolate chips with white chocolate chips. The combination of the two creates a lovely balance of sweet and creamy.
Oats for Texture
If you want a heartier cookie, add ½ cup of rolled oats to the dough. It gives the cookies a slight chew and a bit more substance, perfect for those who love a thicker bite.
Substitute Butterscotch Chips
If you’re feeling adventurous, swap out the chocolate chips for butterscotch or peanut butter chips. My granddaughter loved experimenting with different flavors!
Storing the Cookies
- Room Temperature: After the cookies are completely cooled, store them in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 1 week.
- Freezing: If you want to store them longer, place the cookies in a freezer-safe bag or container and freeze for up to 3 months.
- Reheating: For a fresh, warm taste, microwave the cookies for 10-15 seconds before serving.
